About Depression – What Is Depression?

What is depression? It is a whole body illness and it involves your mood, body and thoughts. Depression affects the way you do things in your everyday life. The way you sleep, eat, feel about yourself and the way you interact socially with other people. having a depressive disorder can be painful and very hard to deal with by yourself, it is not the same as having a blue mood or a down day.

Being depressed is a serious illness and if you think you know someone or if you yourself are suffering from the symptoms of depression I would urge you to seek help. Appropriate treatment can help most people who suffer from depressive disorders.

The disorder involves feelings of sadness that can last for day's or weeks at a time. This causes the person to lose interest in life and themselves. It is a hard thing to beat and most depressed people will simply say that they aren't depressed at all.

Keep in mind that many people either do not know that they are depressed or simply don't know what depression is. It is not a weakness of your character, nor does it mean that you are inadequate. It means that a depressed person has a medical illness that is just as real as cancer or diabetes. It cannot be shaken off or willed away you need to seek professional help.

In the vast majority of cases depression is highly treatable. It is shown that up to 90% of people that are depressive respond positively to one treatment or another. In some cases counselling or psychotherapy is all that is required. Antidepressant medications and other alternatives are also available. I personally do not believe in taking drugs for depression. I feel that counselling and dealing with problems might take longer but in the end it is the healthier alternative.

The most common forms of depression

Major depression (melancholia) can last up to a year if not treated correctly. a person suffering from this form can experience physical problems and emotional difficulties.

Bipolar disorder causes heavy mood swings that range from feeling extremely down to feeling extremely happy. a person suffering from severe bipolar might hear voices and feel paranoid.

Depression is present in our daily lives and we can't escape the fact that it is a serious condition and should be treated like one. I am a recovering depressive and the road is long and hard but in the end it helps to write about what I suffer from.

If you feel you are depressed and would like to change your life go and seek help, it is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign that you are taking control of your life and are willing to make a change to better your situation. not many people will have the courage and determination to drag themselves out of misery, I hope you aren't one of them
