A disturbance in the Caribbean has been upgraded to a tropical depression, the first of the Atlantic hurricane season, according to the National Weather Service.

Alex weakens over Yucatan but to regain storm power
Alex, the first named storm of the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season, was downgraded to a tropical depression as it moved over the Yucatan peninsula but was likely to regain strength over the Gulf of Mexico later on Sunday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

    It's the stage before a hurricane. Katrina was a category 4 hurricane, not a tropical depression.
