What causes someone to go into a manic state vs. a depression state? Meaning why would someone go into a manic state instead of a depression state and vice versa?
So many fathers are like that. They mean well but that fundamental tendency must have genetic roots that extend to primative people. it is life preserving in the wild or various violent sports events. Fighting off wolves and stalking game, that is where quick reflexes and "mania" serve us well. is it mania or intensity? Great warriors possessed the ability to summon up great intensity, quickly. Beware of sematic obfuscation, particulary, in the pseudo sciences that surround you in textbooks and popular media. just because it is written or broadcast doesn't mean it is accurate. more often, it serves to confuse us.
But in modern, complex and technical societies, testosterone and "mania" tends to put such "warriors" in prison, dead or estranged from the family. if they stay out of prison the become isolated and bitter. The warriors can succeed in military and exciting sports that reward this. But, today, it is becoming a terrible liability. it will, possibly, become a trait that is bred out. In other words, mousy geeks win, John Wayne and action heroes lose.
my father is bipolar... whenever something goes bad such as him trying to fix something and it is not working EXACTLY as he planned or something along those lines, he goes into a depressive/angry state. When something good happens that gets him really motivated and hyper, he goe into a manic stage...

This is why it is called Bipolar Disorder. it goes from manic to depressive. Depressive to manic either way and what not.Up down side to side however you look at it, it is how the disorder works.
i bet it has something to do with just there personalities
