Depression, or just teenage angst?

I have a couple of friends at school who are always complaining that they're depressed. It's got to the point where you can't talk to them without them bringing up this topic, and while I don't want to dismiss the idea too quickly, I'm unsure whether this is a sign of proper clinical depression, or just exaggeration.

Both are teenagers and both these cases have come up at the same time. Neither of these girls have any evident problems in their life (abuse, poverty, death etc.) that I'm aware of, either.

So, depression or not? Both are comfortable with complaining about these symptoms to everyone around them - and when I say complaining, I mean it - but as soon as help is suggested, they adamantly refuse. It's almost like they enjoy whining about it, and getting attention over it.

What do you think? Do you think they're genuinely depressed, or just hormones/mood swings? If the former, how should I help? Thank you in advance.

If someone is talking about it, then they are! Get your friends into the guidance office/or advise their parents. This is just my opinion :O)

puberty probibally, depression is over diagnosed in my opinion

it sound to me like hormones because i have a form of depression and im a teenager but i got help with mine.
trust me it was so hard to tell some one about it so for them to just be saying it out in public or to anyone who will listen i'd say their just exaggerating. and if i was you i'd tell either get help with or just shut up about it because depression is a serious thing and if they do have it yeah then fine go and get help but if they dont then i'd tell then to grow up. if they do keep going on about it and refuse to tell like a parent or school nurse, teacher. then you do it . because depression is not something to be taking lightly or just going around telling everyone you have it when you dont.
