Do I have symptoms of Bi-Polar (Manic-Depression) ?

I know that there really is no way of telling unless I go to a doctor, but I am just wondering if there is a chance that the way I'm feeling has anything to do with it.
I am very very happy, or generally content, then suddenly, I will feel depressed, and all the sad things that have happened in the past come flooding back - I just feel like I don't exist any more, originally I thought I might be suffering from plain depression, but it doesn't explain the bursts of happiness and contentedness I feel sometimes. my mum suffered postnatal depression when I was born, I don't know if depression is hereditary.. I've also experienced a hallucination, which I believe can be linked to Manic-Depression or Bi-Polar. I am 16 years old. Advice would be appreciated? thank you :)

You can inherit depression or any other chemical brain disorder (bipolar disorder).

From what you have described it is possible that you are starting to experience symptoms of bipolar disorder and should seek out the services that a mental health professional would be able to provide.

As you stated above, you understand that this is not something that can be diagnosed over a website but needs to have the expertise of a mental health professional.

The longer you wait to see the doctor though the more difficult it is going to be to treat and the longer it is going to take to treat it.

It doesn't sound like your bipolar to me. your description of being content does not sound like the ups that bipolar people have as these tend to be much more manic. If you are worried about anything to do with your mental health you should go to see a professional.

don't worry. it' sjust a name.
as long as you fix your issues by reading books and exercising regularly. you will be fine.

Well, one thing that people are discrediting is your Manic stage, in Bipolar 2 their is something called a hypomania which is basically you have more energy and are more happy, most people with Bipolar actually enjoy being in this stage, they become very productive and creative and it usually doesn't interfere with their normal lives, but how you describe it as content wouldn't make me think that it is a hypomania. To be considered bipolar you have to go through a manic stage for at least a week and a depression stage for at least two weeks. anyone can get depressed even if you don't have a history of it in your family. The depression can last up to 9 months and a mania can last up to 4 months if untreated. and Hallucinations happen when you are either in a depressed stage or a Mania, not in a Hypomania, and you would most likely have more than one. Usually people describe the hallucinations when they are at their worst and they are more common in a phycosis caused by a Mania.

Bi-Polar is either one way or the other with rarely a middle ground..... so either extremely happy (like going out and impulse buying for no reason and spending lots of money) or extremely sad/angry/confused - almost like you have emotions wanting to burst out of yout skin....
bi-polar is really hard to diagnose and normally begins to show between the ages of 19-mid 20s
i want suggest going to the doctors, you need the right help
depression and bi-polar (as with most mental illnesses) are hereditary so knowing your family background could help alot
there are so many mental illnesses, that include hallucination including depression and bi-polar, BPD (borderline personality disorder) and schizophrenia.

go to the doctors and explain all of your problems..... ALL OF THEM no matter how little.... but go to a doctor you trust (and maybe go to another doctor to double check) as mental illnesses tend to be brushed under the carpet

I suffer with Bi-Polar, depression and panick attacks, BPD and it was very hard to get the right treatment and help

good luck hun, remember your only young and it could just be hormones x
