Finding out What you Need to know About Anxiety and Depression - Short Definitions and Simple Ways to Help Yourself
- Mental Symptoms defined. A mental symptom is a description of an emotion, behavior, bodily process or thinking. Anxiety symptoms include bodily tension, racing thoughts, fear or worry, fast or pounding heartbeat and often avoidance of a feared situation. Depressive symptoms can include feeling down or worthless, lack of motivation, short-term memory loss and loss of appetite with weight loss not intended.
- Mental Disorders defined. Anxiety or Depressive Disorders are a group of symptoms that are bothersome enough to cause major and often lasting problems with every-day life and often require special help to overcome.
- You don't need to be crazy to have an Anxiety or Depressive Disorder. Many people suffer from these disorders and are often not noticed as different from the average person. I find that people often are afraid they are crazy because they believe their thoughts or behavior are strange or not normal.
Ways to Help Yourself
- Talk to a trusted friend. you might be lucky and know someone very well who is a good listener and doesn't judge you about your problems and you can trust to keep what you say private. If you are that lucky you might find that simply talking about your feelings could either give you relief or at least give you information about what you might do.
- Learn more about yourself by writing down your experiences and reading.
- If you are like many people you shy away from writing for several reasons. The most common I hear are that you might be afraid someone else might read what you wrote. If so, find a safe place to keep your writing unless you find someone who you can trust, possibly a professional therapist. A second worry is that you think that if you write it down that will make you think you are worse than you thought before. Or, you might think that you won't be able to stand the emotion that comes up when you write. this is only a temporary fear and can be overcome quickly.
- A simple and effective way to write is to draw a line down the middle of a piece of paper. Write down thoughts or memories and number them on the left side. The thoughts that you write that will be most helpful will be negative predictions, labels (such as I am a failure). There will be a lot of gloom and doom if you're really unhappy. On the right side of the paper write down all the challenges you can think of to each thought. this type of writing can be very helpful if you stick with it, although you may need someone to help you think up challenges that really fit for you. this can sometimes be a speedy process but often can be much longer. you might be surprised how enjoyable this can become. I believe that some people have given up on keeping a diary because they might only write down their negative experiences without challenges.
- Learn more about yourself through reading. The Internet is full of helpful information from professionals, support groups and there are many helpful workbooks written by therapists, as well as many books written by people who have suffered from anxiety and depressive disorders.
