Does Amoxicillin cause depression or anxiety in children?

My 9 year old son just finished a round of Amoxicillin for respiratory infection. His fever finally went away, and symptoms lessened, but after 1 day of taking the medicine, he developed a sadness, fear of going to school, and wanting to be near me at all times. He hugs me all the time, wants to sit with me and cries when he thinks about school. As his mom, I am so worried and am shocked because this kid loves school, and has never missed a day. He says that he doesn't know why he is sad, and his twin brother has not seen anything that could cause his sadness. He is just sad and does not know why. could the medication have caused depression or anxiety?

It could. Try reading up on the side-effects. you should have gotten a paper that would list even rare and weird side effects. I would also definitely contact the doctor asap and report what is happening.

You need to contact the doctor to make sure he's not having a bad reaction. some bad reactions look strange. If nothing bad turns up, it could just be that he is worn out and needy from being sick.

It shouldn't at all. I think it's just an excuse for not wanting to go to school.
