That is actually not a depression era tradition. it predates the depression by several decades. In order to get fruit to the northern climates prior to refrigeration, they counted on the winter months to keep the box cars cold. an orange was considered a very special gift and reserved for christmas for many. to this day I still get an orange for christmas to honor the tradition.

Thanks Ruth!! The tradition I heard has the oranges placed in a paper cone like holder and hung on the tree or in the stocking like you described. I don't know if one tradition predates the other, but we as a family each have an orange on the family tree for each member.

Have you not seen the effect of the housing bubble bursting? The whining blubbering overspending nonsaving fools who overextended themselves now walking away from their houses so they can withhold paying their mortgage to pay for their new car and TV and cable and iphone. Sure they are on their way down, and yes, the safety nets will fail. just like "too big to fail" turned out to be a rotten business/government concept, the safety nets will be built up, but will still fall under the weight.

I am, because I do not consider the government reliable to help me out. Anyone who does it fooling themselves.

During the great Depression there was no Welfare or "safety nets" and people were not piled up dead in the streets. Family, neighbors, Friends, Church's took up the slack. but the issue was you were given a hand up, NOT a hand out, Given a hand up it as a one time gift/loan and you work to improve your situation, given a hand out, you sit back and wait for the next hand out. what do you think will benefit EVERYONE in the long run?

Safety net is a misnomer for "how can we fool you today". it is one of the many talking points of the ruling class that have worked in previous elections, but not this one coming up in November. When unemployment numbers hit 20%, will people still think that big government is on their side. we need real private sector jobs that pay and not government handouts that are nothing more than redistribution of income.

Who is planning the demise of safety nets? We're talking about getting rid of government waste. stop scaring people without any facts to support yourself.

In the pre-LBJ years, the safety net was FAMILY FARMS.

The reason factory work created prosperity was that a factory job had to pay better than living as a farmer. if the factory pay was lousy, all the workers would to back to the farm.

Now THERE IS NO FARM to go back to.

10 days try not to crack your head on the concrete when you trip b/c you likely won't have health insurance.to repair yourself and I won't be picking up the tab as you intended.

With Republicans in power the safety nets will be gone
