How do I approach my doctor about depression?

I am fairly sure I have depression. I'm failing my classes because I don't care to do homework or go to class. I go for days without sleep, and then sleep for 20+ hours straight. My eating habits are all off. I have no hope for the future, and have been cutting for almost 10 years. I know I need help, but how do I bring this up? I have been too shy/nervous to do so before, and haven't told anyone how I feel. I just don't know how to break this silence.
Any advice on how to bring up the subject?

You probably need to see a specialist for this.. the way I see it you have Mood swings, and your sleep pattern could suggest a Bipolar Disorder.... DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE of telling your primary care Dr, that you are depressed, most of them rush to give you antidepressants which could really through you over the edge if you were Bipolar....
    Trust me on this

First of all DON"T BE EMBARESSED!! so many people suffer from depression. Its a disease! you wouldn't be afraid to tell someone you have a cold or the flu......do be afraid to tell your doctor that you have depression. There are so many med's out there that can help you! I have depression. Its hard to believe. You kinda don't want to believe it. But its better to get treated. You will feel better! And if you do tell someone like your family don't be ashamed. Good luck!

I would see a psychologist, they would be able to help you mentally and physically.

You are most definitely depressed. You need help immediately not next week. Simply tell your doctor you have spoken with a Psychiatric Social Worker who agrees with your definition of depression. If you don't have money find a Mental Health Center they will accept you no matter what, you may need a short in-patient period to allow the meds to make you feel less like cutting yourself. Do this for me. And later do it for you.

Do you feel comfortable talking about this with your Doctor?
If not, see if you can get an appointment with a Psychitriast. They can evaluate your situation and make the proper diagnosis.
Depression as caused by a Chemical Imbalance and the drugs nowadays have far less side effects from the older ones. It's not your fault that you have Depression and it is very treatable. It is nothing to be ashamed of.
    Good Luck

I would tell my primary care and tell them everything you just said here. You can always write a letter and just tell him or her when they come in that you don't know really how to say or approach what you wanted to say so you wrote it in a letter instead. Be sure that you say you're not suicidal but this is your way of asking for help and also let them know that you have been cutting. That should be able to open the door for a conversation with your doctor about this and ask what he or she recommends and ask them to go over your options with you.

Make an appointment with your doctor, and talk to them about it. Tell them all your symptoms, and they should be able to make a diagnosis. If they can't, they should be able to refer you to someone who can.

I know it probably is hard to talk about, but once you start it will get much easier. Just concentrate on making yourself say one phrase, like "I'm concerned that I may be depressed," or something else that sounds more like you. Once you say that one phrase they will ask you questions and all you'll have to do is answer. Just take a deep breath, get through that one phrase, and it will be easy after that. Good luck.

Go to the hospital and tell them that you have Depression. They will know what to do. I have been battling depression for many years. Trust me, it's worth it if you want to see daylight, or laugh again.

Who told you that the best thing to do is talk to A DOCTOR?

You have to talk to someone that you trust on, whatever his/her profession is.

You need to be listened to.

Try to inhale some orange scent oil, that will bring you up without any medication or drug.

Try to assist to a game where tou can shout, but shout loudly

Later on . . .you will be willing to talk and eventually will feel much better.
