How do you treat a cats depression?

We have a 5 year old cat that is incredibly loyal to my wife and I (she is not greatr with visitors, in fact she's just nasty).

We brought homea new puppy about two months and now all the cat will do is stay under the bed, sleep and only comes out to eat.

Is this a form of depression? Anyone with experience in dealing with this situation?

i have a 6 year old cat.. who was not happy about the new addition of another cat.. i dont know about adding a dog.. but i do know about cats (i have three).. she's feeling like she got the shaft.. try paying a lot of attention to her.. buy her toys.. give her treats.. she'll come out of it.. hopefully sooner then later.. but a little extra love and some bribing with treats wont hurt none... lol =)

Yes; she feels like she may be replaced or something close to that. Carry her around the house with you so that in every room you are in she is there. make her feel that she is absolutely essential to your happiness and well-being. Present the puppy's bum for her to sniff at (that is a non-threatening submissive posture of introduction). Make her feel as if she is more important that the puppy. That means if the puppy invades her space to play or whatever and the cat shows she does not like it, remove the puppy from her vicinity right away. Provide high perching places for her so she can watch what is going on while safe out of the puppy's reach. Some cats NEED bolt-holes and safe spots that they can call their own. Once he gets de-sensitized to the puppy, she'll begin tolerating him.

You have to give your cat maximum of attention. She feels replaced. Keep them a little bit apart from time to time and spend time with the cat. When the cat and dog are together with you, give extra attention to the cat (in front of the dog). Don't leave them alone in the same room if you leave the house. Slowly slowly the cat should adjust, to some level. We used 2 years to get our 2 cats and 1 dog to function more or less healthy together (they met: dog 8, cat 10, cat 5)
