I think I have manic depression – 17 year old girl.?

I noticed this just right now, that I may have it... I don't know why it hasn't clicked before.

I did some research on it a few months ago, when my mother and I were watching Dr. Oz. He was explaining manic depression, or bipolar disorder, to the audience, and we noticed that my father fit every criteria. They're now divorced, but it was something interesting, so I read up on it online, I know a little about it. I've taken online tests just now that tell me that [it's very likely I have a mild case of manic depression].

My father was very messed up. I don't want to turn out like him. But I've noticed things. I think what hit me right now, is that I have extreme moments of optimism and pessimism. I've seriously felting like killing myself at least 3 times this month. But when I think about my boyfriend, I'm so optimistic, it's almost childish.

What my question is: How can I find out if I really have manic depression? How do I know that I'm not confusing it with just having really good days or really bad days? I'm not going to absolutely trust an online quiz to tell me whether or not I am, though it may be a good start. I think what bothers me, is that my father had it, and it's known be genetic. But how do I know I'm not making this more than it is?

My mother and I don't get along, so asking her to see a psychologist would be very, very hard. I've spoken to the guidance councilors at school because I was almost kicked out of my house, and approaching them with this...it would make them think I'm some kind of drama queen. What should I do? (also, in typing that, it makes me think I am building this up - there are reasons for me to be a little down).

even though you don't get along with your mom i am sure that she would be willing to help you if you tell her what is going on and that you have been suicidal. i am bipolar myself, so i am not saying that you are being dramatic...but it is typical of a teenager to have bad emotions toward one thing and good emotions toward something else at the same time (everyone does this) however, it is not ok if you go from being fine to being enraged or depressed within a matter of moments.

either way, if you are suicidal you need to tell someone...you need help...

and be sure you are seeing a psychiatrist and not a psychologist, in some states psychologists cannot diagnose and psychologists cannot prescribe medication, but psychiatrists can.

if you need immediate help, call 911, go to your nearest emergency room, or call this number in the USA 1-800-273-8255...this is not child's play.

It's best to see a psychologist. They would be able to determine if you have bipolar disorder more than any online quiz or research on your own. even if your mother is difficult, it would be best to get a professional opinion. if you do have this disorder, it's likely you'll be medicated and put in therapy. keep in mind that you're still a teenager and teenagers have mood swings because their hormones are at their peak. Tell your mom that you've been depressed and have considered suicide. if she's a good mom, she'll take you. if not, go get help yourself. You're 17, which is considered an adult in many states which means you can get medical attention by yourself without parental consent.
