Manic depression / Bipolar disorder?

...have you or anyone you know been treated for it (them)?

Is so, what was the treatment? Plz and Thx

Manic depression is the old school name for bipolar disorder. they are the same illness.

Bipolar is a progressive illness. Therapy can help teach a person how to manage stress, reframe issues, and recognize indications of an episode, but it alone cannot slow or stop the progression. Medication is necessary. Note that I'm talking about bipolar, not cyclothymia which is a mild up/down mood disorder that is not based in physical brain pathology.

I take low doses of a handful of meds - Lithium, Lamictal, Depakote, and Mirapex. I also go to therapy.

If you think you are bipolar, first schedule a visit to your regular doctor for a full check up including blood tests to make sure that you don't have a medical reason for unusual moods. If you get a clean bill of health, see a psychiatrist for a full evaluation and treatment.

I have been diagnosed Bipolar for fourteen years. I have been on just about every single medication that is currently on the market for Bipolar Disorder and for Depression. currently, I have been in therapy for fourteen years the last two of which have been the worst. I am currently taking Trileptal, Wellbutrin, Restoril, Xanax and Invega.
It is an illness that can be treated and controlled to some extent but not cured. Without treatment it is a BEAST to live with. Characterized by violent extreme and sometimes sudden changes in mood and behavior.
If you think you are Bipolar (or Manic Depressive) I would seek out professional medical assistance as soon as possible.

Hope I have helped!

My son was diagnosed with bipolar with manic tendencies. after trying almost every bipolar med from abilify to zyprexa, he is on risperdal consta, which is a shot he gets every two weeks.

In addition to the meds, there are visits to the therapist, psychiatrist and bipolar meetings.

Good luck.

Lithium is commonly used to treat bipolar disorder. Also therapy is beneficial.

It is best to consult with a Psychiatrist and see what works best for you. for most patients it is a matter of trial and error. some medications work great for some but have too many side-effects/complications for others. So working closely with a Psychiatrist to monitor how different treatments work is best.

Ive studied pyschology at uni, and it depends on how severe the bipolar symptoms are...
because there are highs, and lows it really depends how high the high is and how low the low is. in severe cases meds are recommended, and they level the moods and feelings experienced. one still has highs and lows - they are just alot more moderate.
In cases where the lows and highs are not too severe, cognitive behavioural or interpersonal therapy is generally the approach. this is done through therapy sessions which help one retrain the way they think about situations and events - these thoughts are what leads to the emotions we experience - thus this changes or moderates the emotions we feel by dealing with the source, the estatic and subliminal thoughts or the dperessive thoughts
In addition, keeping pysically healthy has proven in many studies to have a significant impact on mental health. eating a balanced diet, exercising (even if it is just a daily walk) reading, painting or a hobby, being close to pets and also close to nature can have positive effects on feelings... these are good for when one is feeling low.

hope this helped.

For me it is currently Lamictal (400 mg/day), Geodon (160mg/day), Wellbutrin (200mg/day), Klonopin as needed. Psychiatrist once a month, phychologist every two weeks. the meds change frequently as I develope side effects or they stop working.

I've never been treated for it..... but I swear for awhile there I was manic depressant... just never sought treatment.

Now, I've known others who WERE treated, and it was usually with medication and some therapy.

Yes! their Brother and Sister, Twins in fact and I been hit with both of them in my family. Zoloft is the Meds of chose for me.
Verdict still out to know if it works.
