Manic Depression/Bipolar?

I am doing a research project for my Health 250 class (Wellness.) We are supposed to choose a disease or conditional that we find interesting or that has impacted our lives in a personal way. I am doing bipolar disorder/manic depression, as I am bipolar type 2 and struggle immensely on a day to day basis with the realities of the disorder, and my SEVERELY bipolar type 1 uncle committed suicide several years ago.

Anyway, I obviously know on a personal level what bipolar disorder type 2 is, but I don't know much about type 1, cyclothemia, and that stuff.

If you have ANY statistics and/or information to share, that'd be awesome. Personal experiences are also a huge help!

Thanks!

Anna

Well, as you know, my son is bipolar I with manic tendencies. His moods fluctuate between normal and full-blown mania. He went up to Oswego to finish his senior year of college and in rather short order he dropped out of school, got kicked out of the frat house, opened up a store, exhausted his life savings and attempted to walk home some 700 miles with no shoes on while carrying a drawer full of wires while chanting how he was going to take over the world. He was in and out of mental institutions, the last of which he escaped and ran over the barbed wire fence and ran home (hes a marathon runner) only to be brought back by the cops.

After he got out of the second institution, he tried to flip my daughters room into his and he painted the whole room white and painted the floor white and wrote us we go all over the place. He threw everything out of my daughters room including her bed and the rug and everything else. Then he was committed again. He stopped taking his meds at the end of November and I have been a nervous wreck ever since. but only with your help I was able to on April 1, 2008, get him back on meds. He took his first pill yesterday 25 mg of lamictal. He went running and hes out now but Im hoping he will take his pills without me reminding him.

Good luck on your report. Im sure you will ace it.
