What medication should I take?
First let me say right now that I am not a doctor, just a person who used to suffer from OCD and anxiety and used to have to take a lot of pills to deal with these conditions.
I am not prescribing anything and anything I say right now is just my own opinion and is not intended to prevent, treat, or cure any disease.
Now, doctors usually will prescribe medications such as SSRI's (Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors).
These medications are used to treat depression, OCD, phobias, anxiety, or any combination of them. They may even be used for other purposes.
What you need to know is that these medications are very useful and can help a person get a grip on things especially if their OCD or anxiety is ruining their lives.
If you are unable to go to work or go anywhere, you should consider one of these. I would talk to your doctor and ask them which one is the safest for you.
This class of medication is indicated for long term use.
The drug class I'm about to talk about is for immediate relief of severe symptoms of OCD and Anxiety.
This class of drug is called benzodiazepines.
These include drugs like Ativan, Xanax, Vallum, etc.
These work by calming you down in the event of an anxiety attack.
Why am I telling you about these drugs?
Some people can become OCD free without drugs, however some people have let it go on for so long that it would be impossible for them to become OCD or Anxiety free without them
So do not be afraid to use the medications that are prescribed to you and use them exactly as directed.
Don't take it here or there, be responsible and the more responsible you are, the sooner your doctor can titrate you off of them.
The ultimate goal is to get to a point where you don't need the drugs anymore, and only you and your doctor can decide that.
The point of what I am telling you is simply this. Don't have too much pride not to take drugs if your doctor thinks you need them. Trust me, I waited a while and I prolonged my healing because I didn't listen to people who know what their talking about. Don't make the same mistake
Take action: If you have OCD or Anxiety and it's pretty rough, see your doctor and do what he/she says, period. Let them know that you don't want to be on pills forever, and that you want to be able to titrate off from them once you are able to learn how to control your thoughts better. Don't have too much pride, it's just costing you freedom later when the OCD or Anxiety gets worse.
Do yourself a favor and listen to those who have gone down the road before you, you'll save yourself a lot of heartache and you'll shorten the time it takes for you to become OCD and Anxiety free, period.
