Some Facts About Maniac Depression

Maniac depression is an illness during which the person drastically swings between different moods and states of mind; he can be low and depressed one moment and overexcited and active in another. it is basically a condition when a person experiences depressive and maniac episodes, he alternates between two 'poles' of moodiness hence this type of depression is also called bipolar disorder.

Because the person sways between feeling high and low, his energy level also fluctuates, one moment he's feeling sad, helpless, unwanted and worthless (depression) while soon he sways to a state of feeling elated and top of the world as if life if perfect, happy and exciting making him feel overly active and creative. Basically this depression deals with the rapid change in energy and feelings of a patient, these severe and drastic mood swings are called episodes.

Bipolar disorder majorly involves the following episodes:

1)Maniac Episodes: A hyperactive state of mind with an elevated mood signifies a maniac episode, if this lasts for almost a week or happens everyday for the larger part of the day, coupled with at least 3 more symptoms then it's time to sound the alarm. If the maniac episode involves irritability also then at least four symptoms should come into play together.
2)Depressive episode: Feeling low, unhappy, purposeless and lethargic. If the symptoms persist for 2 weeks or more along with five or more warning signs then we can conclude that the person is undergoing a depressive episode
3)Mixed episodes: In these types of episodes the person experiences both the above mentioned symptoms. the patient could feel energetic, creative, low and unhappy at the same time.

Maniac depression affects people of all ages, sexes, socio-economic backgrounds, ethnic groups and societies. This type of depression has a profound impact on the patient's family and home environment as well. the people around him are bound to be affected and at times rattled by his mood swings. it most commonly occurs at young adolescence and the most glaring reason is family history of these episodes.

The chemical imbalances in the brain which make the person act up can be corrected with the help of medication. the medicines correct these imbalances to facilitate normal behavior by the patient and in some cases improve it as well. Severe form of this disorder can be life threatening propelling the person to commit suicide and in some cases even homicide, as he hardly has any control over his actions.
