Tropical storm warning issued as depression forms in Pacific off Mexico's southwestern coast
MIAMI - A tropical depression has formed in the Pacific off Mexico's southwestern coast and a tropical storm warning was issued for the area. The National Hurricane Center in Miami says the tropical storm warning is for the coast of Mexico from Salina Cruz to Lagunas de Chacahua.

Atlantic hurricane seasons have been pretty quiet lately. Last year had the fewest in history, so "more intense tropical storms" predictions are obviously nothing more than guesses.
It's the stage before a hurricane. Katrina was a category 4 hurricane, not a tropical depression.
