It has been shown statistically that every year approximately 10 - 20% of the world's population and about 9.5% of the American population suffer from depression. it is easy to see from those statistics that depression is a significant illness which affects hundreds of millions of people around the world. it is a devastating illness which not only destroys those afflicted, but also the families involved.
While the symptoms of depression vary there are some common elements to be aware of. The illness is primarily a mental one, so the disorder relates to various functions of the mind. it can lead to loss of appetite, swings in feelings and moods, sleep disorders and often more than not a very deep sense of despair.
Depression can often be traced back to stress and significant life changing situations. some experts believe it may also have to do with heredity. other causes can be found with drug use, alcoholism, and mental illness. it is not surprising that women may have the illness more than men. this can be attributed to hormonal swings due to menstrual cycles, bodily changes brought about by pregnancy and pre/post menopause.
Five of the more common symptoms are:
- Overwhelmed, often feeling hopeless and helpless in situations that normally arise
- Feelings of prolonged and unshakable sadness and anxiety
- Lack of self worth, and feeling helpless and guilty about everything
- Feeling tired all the time, having little to no energy, and a significantly reduced metabolism
- Not being able to focus or make decisions
If you have any of these symptoms, and notice any significant behavior changes then please go see your doctor. Do not pass go, do not collect $200, go see your doctor immediately. You need to get checked out to see what may be going on with your health. Your doctor will give you a recommendation after the tests come back and discuss possible healing alternatives for you to consider. this is a very serious matter and needs to be dealt with accordingly.
This is your life we are talking about. You need to take charge and create the life you want to live. it is time to get rid of any and all negativity in your mind. Change what you have been doing, get out and meet new people, change your self- talk. get rid of all the negativity and look at the glass as half full and not half empty.
Make every effort to seek help to change. this is a serious illness and not to be taken lightly. And should you find you are having thoughts of a suicidal nature run to get help. You need to take the first step, then let friends, family and the medical community help you with the rest.
