What are the causes of having a depression type of dual diagnosis?

My classmate Denise and I were talking yesterday. She told me about her mother's current battle with depression. She made it sound so serious and so hard to deal with that I got really scared. I feel sorry for her mom. Can somebody tell me how a person becomes depressed? I just want to know the things I should avoid. Thanks.

Depression is brought about by powerful negative thoughts and emotions. People who have low self-esteem and pessimistic views are more likely to be depressed than people bursting with confidence and optimism. Other causes of depression include hormonal functions, romantic problems, sudden loss, financial difficulties, work-related stress, identity crisis and other types of misery.
