What is the most common cause for depression?

I know someone who is suffering from depression. And I was wondering if depressed people actually look different (physically) from a person who is not depressed? And what are some common symptoms?

no. there is no external differences from people suffering from depression as compared to those who dont suffer from it. depression is a genetic disorder that is hereditary or passed down from your mother/father. you wont know if you are depressed unless you get tested by a therapist

    No, no physical differences

The latest findings show, that a restricted blood flow to the brain causes depression, and when the restriction gets removed, the depression disappears.

Other than psychological factors such as mental abuse, and stress. The medical factors would include in the imbalance of chemicals know as neurotransmitters. These chemicals serve to send messages from the pre to post synaptic clefts. So common neurotransmitters include dopamine, Seratonin, GABA, and Acetylcholine.

    A chemical imbalance

Depressed people generally don't look different from others--though they may not shower, groom, and get dressed sometimes.

Symptoms include: sleeping all the time, overeating, undereating, not sleeping at all, not performing normal everyday tasks, staying in bed all day, loss of sexual desire, talk/thoughts of suicide, basically feeling worthless, useless, etc.

Depression can be an inherited disease. It can be caused due to insecurity, as well as chemical imbalances in the brain. It can be triggered by moods, circumstances, and daily episodes of life's ups and downs.
A depressed person will often look sad and sometimes angry. They can be short tempered which is triggered by their mood swings.
I am not a doctor, but would advise that you may want to suggest they see a counselor first to talk about what it bothering them, to determine if medication is necessary and recommended.
Good luck and it's nice that you care and are concerned.
