When a Family Won’t Get Help for Depression

Depression has always seemed to carry a negative stigma in our society. a few years ago no one even wanted to talk about it or admit that they, or someone the loved, suffered from depression. If a family had a parent or child that was living with depression the choices were to not talk about it and pretend that it wasn't happening, seek out professional help and/or medication or send that person to a mental institute. Sadly, many chose not to get help.

When a family won't get help for depression there are a number of negative consequences that happen that not only affect the person with depression, but every person in the family. Here are just a few:

- If a mother has depression and chooses not to get help her children suffer because they have a sad mother that struggles to get out of bed in the morning and that cries a lot. the children see this and they internalize it and begin to believe that they are the reason that their mother is sad. they suffer emotional damage as they try over and over again to make their mother happy.

- If a father has depression and won't get help for it the results can cost the family greatly. If the father is the sole provider for the family and becomes severely depressed and decides not to go into work or loses his job due to bad performance, suddenly the family has no income, no insurance benefits and a father that is even more depressed, and perhaps a bit more mean, because he has no job.

- If a child has depression and is not given proper help, the child might not have the proper coping skills to deal with the depression. their sadness might turn into loneliness which might lead to isolation, which might lead to drugs and alcohol, which might ultimately lead to suicide because they don't understand why they are so sad and why no one wants to be around them and why that can't feel better. they do not know that depression is not their fault and that they are not a bad person because they have it.

These are just a few of the outcomes that can happen when a family does not seek help for depression. It is only through awareness and education that families can learn to cope with depression and find the proper help. Depression is not something that magically goes away or that can be cured, but it is something to learn to live with and many have found more positive outcomes through therapy and/or medication.
