The DSV-IV lists nine symptoms for major depressive disorder. i experience all the psychological, but none of the physical symptoms, as follows (i've shortened the descriptions):
YES (1) depressed mood
YES (2) markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities
NO (3) significant weight loss when not dieting or weight gain or decrease or increase in appetite nearly every day.
NO (but when i can, i like to sleep 10 hours) (4) insomnia or hypersomnia nearly every day
NO (but sometimes i feel a little restless or slowed down) (5) psychomotor agitation or retardation nearly every day
MAYBE (but i’m able to work out 1-3 hours a day) (6) fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day
YES (7) feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt
YES (8) diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness
YES (9) recurrent thoughts of death (not just fear of dying), recurrent suicidal ideation without a specific plan, or a suicide attempt or a specific plan for committing suicide
Has anyone else experienced this? is there any significance to this??
Do i have fewer physical symptoms because I'm relatively young (mid-20s)?
I've had dysthymia for over ten years, with numerous episodes of major depression.
One thing to consider is what are physical symptoms? Fatigue is a physical symptom as is the inability to concentrate. the general thinking about major depression is that if it is moderate to severe, then medication is necessary. This is especially true for someone who has had previous depressive episodes. the general consensus concerning medication is that you should see some improvement at 6 weeks.
What? Are you complaining?
Just because you have depression doesn't mean you will experience all the symptoms.
Well, that's nothing to worry about. not showing physical effects, that is.
I'm a lot like that too.
Why do I experience all the psychological but none of the physical symptoms of depression?
