Your source For Radical Depression Treatments

Treatments for Depression have a wide variety of intensity. for our purposes now, we will consider only radical depression treatments. Some of these treatments are invasive, meaning that some type of surgical procedure is a component of the treatment.
We'll take a look at three of these radical Depression treatments.

Deep Brain Stimulation

This procedure is not yet approved by the FDA-Food and Drug Administration. This is a complicated procedure requiring two surgeries. The process involves numbing the area of the brain that is to be stimulated. The patient remains awake during the surgery so that the surgeon can talk to you as each area of the brain is stimulated. Two holes are drilled into the skull and electrodes are implanted in the brain.

The second surgery requires chest surgery where the neuro-transmitting device is inserted. Wires are put under the skin leading to the battery operated neuro-transmitter. There are some side effects that could be extremely serious.

These side effects include brain bleeds, infection, and delirium. Movement disorders and unusual side effects may also occur. Light headedness and Insomnia are also possible side effects.

Electroconvulsive Therapy

Also known as ECT, this procedure begins with the patient being given a general anesthetic as well as a muscle relaxer. Electrodes are placed in the scalp and very controlled pulses of electricity are delivered to the patient. if the procedure is done properly a seizure will result. Typically in a seizure muscles would stiffen but in this procedure the muscles are relaxed and so only slight movement of the hand and feet. When the patient awakens a few minutes after the procedure is complete. They will remember nothing of the procedure or events surrounding the procedure. They might be confused after the treatment.

Vagal Nerve Stimulation

This procedure is done by implanting a pacemaker type device in the chest. Electrical pulses are delivered to the Vagus Nerve that runs from the neck to the brain and is meant to alleviate depressive symptoms. It can be used to treat Epileptic seizures as well.

Conclusion

These procedures are indeed radical depression treatments. none of them are without inherent dangers including injury to the brain. They are used for only the most severe cases of depression. all levels of Depression can be treated according to the intensity and experience of the patient.
