Florida to try new methods for keeping oil from shore as Alex weakens
As the Atlantic's first tropical storm weakened to a depression, posing little threat to oil spill recovery efforts in the Gulf of Mexico , Florida Gov. Charlie Crist on Sunday announced two new efforts -- funded by oil giant BP -- to keep crude from the state's shores.

Yucatan, Gulf brace for first storm of the season
The first tropical depression of the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season neared storm strength in the western Caribbean on Friday as it took aim at Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

    Atlantic hurricane seasons have been pretty quiet lately. Last year had the fewest in history, so "more intense tropical storms" predictions are obviously nothing more than guesses.

    It's the stage before a hurricane. Katrina was a category 4 hurricane, not a tropical depression.
